Woodcarving Class (NEW)

Learn the art of woodcarving from an award winning woodcarving artist. Mark Daynes was born in England and has 30 years experience with wood. His skills as a woodworking artist have won him awards at various art shows in the country. Students will learn wood and carving basics, relief carving (low relief and high relief) safety as well as the tools and sharpening. This class’s main carving project will be the lid of a box decorated by Celtic designs. Picture is a sample and may not be the exact box created.

Baby Signs® Parent Workshop (NEW)
This is a one-time class especially designed for parents of children from birth to 24 months. You will learn all you need to know to begin signing with your baby at home. Early childhood educators, parent educators, social workers and health specialists are also welcome. The price of this hands-on, fun workshop includes the Baby Signs® Parent Kit, to help you incorporate what you learn in class into your daily routines with your baby. Spouses are encouraged to come.

 Want to learn to sew? Alter tee-shirts?, hem jeans?, replace zippers? Learn the art of restructuring clothes, repairing clothes or how to make something from scratch. Students will be introduced to basic sewing techniques, as well as, measuring for a perfect fit, using patterns and other sewing tools. This is a beginner class, as each student will choose projects that interest them. Machines, fabric and some patterns available for starter projects. Class will be offered every month!

After School Elementary School Sewing Class (NEW)
Young students can learn basic hand stitching and sewing skills through various projects taught in this class. Drawing with thread and simple embroidery will be explored through self-portrait dolls and creative stitching on fabric and paper. Small motor skills will be developed while learning the basics of threading needles and working with sewing tools. No supplies needed!

Art Club (NEW)
This class will offer a variety of activities for middle and high school students. Collage, pottery, painting, drawing, paper mache’ and more will be some of the disciplines covered. Elements and principles of design will be studied and discussed as students will learn how to critique, edit and develop their work. Class time can also be used to help students with special school projects, as needed. Artists will be studied and possible field trips will be scheduled.

Beginner’s Ballroom for Two Left Feet (NEW)
In this eight week class you will learn the Waltz, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha-cha and Salsa by an instructor with a humorous and fun approach who will demystify ballroom dancing. An incurable klutz turned Fred Astaire dance instructor, Kathreen Chrisman has taken tips & tricks that normally get introduced into dance lessons after much time and investment an created a fun beginner’s ballroom dancing class. Beadweaving Workshop: Jeweled Orb Pendant (NEW)
Create a beautiful Jeweled Orb Pendant from start to finish using off-loom beadweaving techniques as well as simple wire wrapping. Students will learn to create three dimensional, geometric, beaded beads and incorporate them into a pendant with a basic wire wrapped bail.
The instructor is a self-taught bead artist who is currently holding classes and workshops across the Gulf Coasts. Her work is inspired by antique jewelry, geometric forms, vintage lace and nature.

Acrylic Painting (NEW)
Join Long Beach artist David Jones for this fun and comprehensive acrylic painting course, for both beginners and advanced students. Students will learn color theory, paint mixing, composition and a wide variety of acrylic painting techniques in order to learn to paint in your style. One on One coaching will lead to visible improvement in your work whether you are a beginner or a more advanced painter. Students will complete at least two finished paintings during the five sessions.
David Jones is an accomplished Mississippi artist and teacher, with paintings in numerous galleries. He has taught school teachers how to teach and art and has taught hundreds of students how to draw and paint. He will teach you to give up the “I have no talent” notion and produce paintings you like.

Women in Shakespeare Shakespeare Sessions (NEW)
Did your high school English class leave you with the feeling that you were missing something when reading Shakespeare? This is not your high school English class. Come learn another side of Shakespeare while studying the characters and themes from the open perspective of performing and directing. Instructor PJ Fox spent 17 years in the theater and explores the characters and plays of Shakespeare from a different perspective than the high school English teacher.
Study the women in Shakespeare and learn the importance of these characters to the stories we grew up reading. In this session you will be studying Cleopatra, Portia, Lady MacBeth, Juliet and Rosalind among others as you look at the choices that they made and how their characters were developed by Shakespeare. You will learn about a dark side of Shakespeare that is not common knowledge. No books are required for this course. Portions of the plays will be read aloud to illuminate the various character traits of these characters, as well as the consequences of those choice.

Cartooning (NEW)
Come learn the basics of Cartooning and Visual Storytelling! This class includes learning drawing and illustration techniques so that students can create their own characters and stories. Participants will also play Cartoon trivia and Drawing games. Students just need to bring pencils, erasers, rulers, a sketchbook and their imagination to class.

Ethnic Modern Dance Class (NEW)
This fun and inspirational dance class will incorporate beginning and intermediate level fundamentals of various modern dance techniques while incorporating choreography from Israel, Cuba, and Africa. Advanced Drawing
Farah Ebadi has been an artist and has taught art since 1987. Farah was a visual art studio major and has a B.S. in Art Education. She was an Artist in Residence with the National Endowment for the Arts in rural Alabama 1987 to 1992 in charge of setting up art programs in schools while maintaining a working studio. She has continued to create and teach ever since. She has taught hundreds of people to draw and believes everyone can learn to draw; in fact she guarantees it. Farah has received many awards for her artwork and is currently working on a series of paintings. In addition to her own awards, she is proud of that fact that many of her students have also received awards for their own drawings.
In the beginning drawing class students will learn elements of drawing such as line, value, depth, composition and texture. Students will also be learning to draw people. At the end of the class you will be able to draw!

Advanced Methods in Stained Glass, Copper Foil Method (NEW)
The use of copper foil instead of or in conjunction with lead came in stained glass windows was developed and made popular by John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany in the 19th century. This method allows smaller pieces of glass to be used and allows artists to build pieces three dimensionally. Participants in this class will learn advanced techniques in glass cutting and how to construct stained glass panels using the copper foil method. Participants will select or design their own pattern and glass and bring it to the first class.

Private Guitar Lessons for Children and Adults
Private Guitar lessons offered by a K-12 music teacher with over 30 years of experience. Lessons are available from beginning to advanced levels for ages 5 and up. A variety of styles are taught including classical, folk, country, blues, etc. Students learn all about guitar techniques and how to read music. Simple and familiar to advance melodies are taught.

Advanced Youth Symphony with Arlene Gomes
2009-2010 FALL-SPRING SESSION (ages 9-18)
The Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center of Arts and Education Advanced Youth Symphony will begin rehearsals on Monday, August 24th. Symphony instruments are primarily Violins, Violas, Cellos, and String Basses. Limited positions for wind instrument members are Flutes, Oboes, Bassoons, Clarinets, Trumpets, French Horns, Trombones, Baritones Horns, Tubas, and Percussion. The Advanced Youth Symphony rehearses on Monday’s 5:00pm – 6:30pm.
*Please Note: Non-members are welcome to observe our rehearsals. An audition is required for potential new members who would like to participate. Audition criteria is the D Concert Scale & Arpeggio (2 Octaves), Bb Concert Scale & Arpeggio (2 Octaves), a prepared Solo/Etude that emphasizes Style/Technique and Sign Reading.
