Art Camp

These one week art camps are perfect for the budding artists. Bring your child for just the morning or send a lunch with them and they can stay for a second session in the afternoon. Different sessions are different types of art including drawing, illustration, painting, clay work, and textiles. Separate sessions and instruction for each age group (5-8 and 9-14).

Ready, Set, Draw!

Students will learn about patterns, motifs, elements of design and basic composition as they develop their personal drawing style. Sketching in an art journal will be a big part of the class and they will learn how to develop their ideas further with various drawing exercises. Trips to The Mary C.’s galleries and gardens will give students many opportunities to draw a variety of subject matter. From their sketches, they will compose an idea utilizing the elements of design on larger paper. Materials explored will be graphite, color pencil, markers, and oil pastels. Students will need to bring their own 9x12 art journal.

Water Coloring Nature - Have you ever looked really closely at a leaf or a tiny bug? Water Coloring Nature will ask you to slow down and look deeply and closely at nature. This class will be outside drawing the nature around us and then using watercolor painting techniques to turn our drawings into beautiful works of art.

Textile and Fashion Workshop

Students will learn how to design, draw and create a simple garment. They will work in their own fashion journal using magazines, sketches, fabric and more to express ideas. Traditional human proportions and drawing tips will be introduced, as students will learn how to identify different body types, clothing styles, and fabric. Participants will learn how to use a pattern, pin, cut, and basic garment construction methods. Students will need to bring their own 9x12 art journal.

Collage and Mixed Media Exploration

The term collage comes from the French: à coller, to glue. Collage as an art form began in ancient China but you probably associate it with a more modern period and the artist Pablo Picasso or Henri Matisse, only a couple of the more well known artists who used collage in their works .In this class we will use a variety of papers and glue along with watercolor, pastel, acrylic, gel medium, oil pastels and anything else we can get our hands on, to create interesting and unique works of art.

Printmaking with Everyday Objects

Learn the basics of printmaking and how to use everyday objects has a creative way of making patterns and developing pieces of art. Students will use all types of materials, like vegetables and gadgets to explore pattern organization and printmaking. Monoprint, stencil, and collagraph printing on paper and fabric will be included. Terms and techniques will be part of the class. All supplies included.

Altered Book Journal Class - Where do old library books go when they die? To the Altered Book Journal Class! We will take old books and repurpose them into expressions of our own personal feelings and life. A variety of techniques will be explored including acrylic paint, watercolor paint, stamping, sewing, and transferring. The only limits in this class are the limits of your imagination.

Art Journaling

Students will learn the art of recording ideas in a journal while learning ways to develop some ideas further. Basic drawing concepts, like shading, proportion, perspective will be taught while elements and principles of design will be introduced through an assortment of drawing exercises. Collecting and gluing in images, recording information, and brainstorming with sketches will help further each student’s drawing style and creativity. Student will need a 9x12 art journal. All other materials supplied.

 

Manga Camp - Drawing of Anime Cartoons

Learn the techniques of Manga, also known as Anime. Learn to draw characters like the ones seen in Naruto, Bleach or One Piece. Students will learn the techniques, history and qualities of Manga as compared to other art forms. Taught by an amazing young artist, students will venture into their imagination and create their own characters. Bring sketch pad, regular and colored pencils.

Get ready to pound, nail, collage, print, paint, glue and create using found objects, papers, ephemera and just about anything you imagine. Don't worry if you do not have your own stash of stuff. Provie brings plenty of creative "stuff" for your use.  A noted artist and teacher, Provie will inspire you to create your own two or three-dimensional artworks. Beginning Pottery

Learn the basics of wheel throwing in this fun class, with native local Ocean Springs artist and potter, Mark King. Beginning Watercolor

Although water color is sometimes seen as unforgiving, it is so much fun. Come and learn to paint. Voice for Life Program

VOICE for LIFE is the Royal School of Church Music’s acclaimed guide to training choirs and singers of all ages and levels. This program provides a framework for choral singers to develop their vocal skills, their musical understanding, and their knowledge of the repertoire.  Once the program is completed, the student will be a certified RSCM chorister.  There is nowhere else on the coast to get this training.  Learn songs as a group, but students will complete the books and classwork at their own pace.

Beginner Bellydance

Build your own 14’ “Skin-on-Frame” Kayak in Two Days

Join us for the first ever kayak building class offered at the Mary C. You will learn the basics of utilizing lightweight and surprisingly durable “skin-on-frame” construction techniques to build your own kayak in this two day class.  Mark Daynes, master furniture craftsman, sculptor and artist-turned boat builder will guide you on this fascinating and rewarding journey.  Mark has created custom kayak kits of spruce and white rip-stop nylon which will be pre-cut and ready for your arrival.  The “Jawbone” style kayak design has been adapted to take advantage of our local coast waters. This stable kayak features an open cockpit design and is light weight (final weight ranging for this 14’ beauty of 30-40 lbs).  As newly anointed boat builders, you are invited to showcase your creations and launch them at Fort Maurepas Park in Ocean Springs, MS during the Southcoast  Summerfest on Saturday, June 23.

Participants will us staple guns, hand saws, small hammer, block plane, Phillips screwdriver and 2” china bristle paint brushes. (You can bring your own tools or use those furnished by instructor)

Wire Wrapping Jewelry


In this introduction to wire wrapping, you will learn the basic techniques to turn and twist metal to create beautiful pieces of jewelry. These two hour classes will teach you the techniques that you will need to create all types of jewelry with wire, stones and beads. At the end of each class you will have created a beautiful, one of a kind pendant, ring, necklace or earrings that you will enjoy wearing anywhere. 3D Stained Glass Construction


Participants in this class must have taken Beginning Stained Glass or have previous glass cutting experience. In this class students will learn techniques for 3 dimensional construction while assembling a tripod table lamp. Two sheets of opaque glass, cork backed ruler, and a sharpie marker should be brought to class. The purchase of a hardware kit is required.

Voice for Life Program

VOICE for LIFE is the Royal School of Church Music’s acclaimed guide to training choirs and singers of all ages and levels. This program provides a framework for choral singers to develop their vocal skills, their musical understanding, and their knowledge of the repertoire.  Once the program is completed, the student will be a certified RSCM chorister.  There is nowhere else on the coast to get this training.  Learn songs as a group, but students will complete the books and classwork at their own pace.

Photography:  Beyond the basics with your DSLR

Students must have either prior knowledge of shutter speeds and aperture usage or have taken my beginning digital SLR photo class.  Students will leave this class with a better understanding of shutter speeds and aperture to get the best exposure for their digital pictures.  In this class, we will be exploring other photographic realms like close up photography and portrait photography.  Principles of design and composition will also be discussed so students can improve their images compositionally.  Since this class is hands-on, please, bring your camera and manual to every class.  Please make sure that your camera is charged before each class.  This class is for DSLR cameras.
