Vega Bellydance Featuring Karma Karmelita
Join us for an enchanted evening of bellydance! Bellydance is one of the oldest forms of dance and has been growing in popularity all over the world in recent years. In the Middle East, the dance is more commonly called “Raqs Sharqi.” It is believed that the dance first came to America in 1893 at the Chicago World’s Fair. During that time, the Hollywood film industry sought to capitalize on the peaked interest in this new exotic dance form, and this contributed to the transformation of the dance from a folk dance that was passed on from generation to generation into a performance art.
This show will feature student performances from students of Vega Bellydance here in Ocean Springs as well as performances from professional dancers both local and traveling. Featured in our show is Atlanta bellydancer Karma Karmelita. Karmelita, or Karma for short, began her journey into belly dance in 2005. A rowdy tomboy and farmgirl, she never expected to fall head over heels in love with this performance artform! Throughout the years, she has studied and performed all over–from Las Vegas to Istanbul, Turkey! She has danced for weddings, parties, and events for audiences of all ages and backgrounds, including Punjabi Superstar, Imran Khan.
Karma has become one of the most sought after Atlanta belly dance artists, and for good reason! She is most known for her highly energetic and fabulously fun belly dance and fire shows. Though her free spirit and infectious smile will really warm your heart, Karma prides herself in being a high quality entertainer, having invested so much time, research, distance, and blood-sweat and tears into her craft. She’ll make you laugh, she’ll make you clap, she’ll make you sit on the edge of your seat with her daring scimitar and fire-eating stunts. You can see her performing 4-6 nights a week at local Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurants and nightclubs doing what she loves!
